FAA Approves SSA Aeronautical Forecasts

PEOTONE – On March 23, 2011, the FAA informed the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics, that it had approved the updated aviation forecasts for the South Suburban Airport’s Master Plan. “This is truly a significant accomplishment,“ says Susan Shea, director of the Illinois Division of Aeronautics. Shea continued: “FAA’s approval of our forecasts validates the need to develop airport facilities that will serve the south suburban greater Chicagoland area.”

As part of updating the forecasts, IDOT verified the major elements of aviation demand: Passengers, Cargo and General Aviation/Corporate Aviation. The South Suburban Airport is located in Will County which was recently confirmed by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of the fastest-growing counties in Illinois. Based on Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s data, there are nearly 1.8 million people in the SSA Passenger Service Area (PSA) today. By 2030, it is expected that almost 2.3 million people will reside in the SSA PSA.

SSA is located near major national truck routes and global distribution facilities in Elwood, Joliet and Harvey, and it will add to the region’s expanding 21st Century transportation infrastructure. With this important task completed, Aeronautics will proceed on the completion of the remaining chapters of the SSA Airport Master Plan.
